While dumping the morning trash from the office yesterday I happened upon a raccoon sitting at the bottom of the nearly empty dumpster eating his, or her morning breakfast. A bit startling to be sure, as you don't expect to see something crawling around in the dumpsters the first thing in the morning. Occasionally you'll happen upon a skunk, out for a morning stroll, or a cat or two out napping in the morning sun on some of the abandoned furniture, and rabbits..yeah those guys think they own the yards and the parking lots during the early morning hours, and will ignore you like your the guy out of place as they continue to munch on the grasses. But the raccoon's ,nope you hardly ever see those guys. I said good morning to the little dude (?) and went about my work. After cleaning up the yard in phase one I went back to said dumpster to empty my trash and the little guy was still there. Now no longer eating, he just started up at me from the bottom of the bin.. any of you who ever own a dog know that look. It's the "hey, I screwed up Mr. Human look. Not wanting to make the little guy skittish, or defensive I used another dumpster to dump my trash into and went to clean up in the other two phases.... By the time I was finally done with all three phases, The raccoon was still sitting at the bottom of the dumpster. When I looked in the dude (?) sat back on his haunches and for the life of me held out both of his arms like he (?) was asking me to pick him up. Then it dawned on me Mr. or Mrs, Raccoon had either crawled into, or fell into the dumpster while looking for a morning meal and couldn't climb back out. So, the big softy that I am I figured I'd help him/her out of the jam it had gotten itself into. Grabbing a makeshift ladder ( a broken section of the bottom of an abandoned couch) I carried it over to the dumpster my new friend was stuck in and lowered one end of it into the bin, setting the other end on the top rim of the dumpster. As I was doing this the raccoon calmly sat off to one side watching me. As if he knew help to get out was happening. When I finished setting up this ramp, I told the raccoon..there you go and went to finish cleaning the unit I was working in the day before. The unit did take long to finish up, so I thought I'd check on my friends progress...sure enough when I got back he/she had used the makeshift ladder to crawl out. As far as good deeds go it wasn't much really. Had I not helped the critter out, I'm sure it might have figured a way to do so on it's own. Raccoons can and are very smart that way. But that look it gave me when I went to toss the trash from phase one, like a pet who needed a humans understanding to fix something for them that it couldn't do themselves.... well what could I do? As humans we all do stupid things once and awhile. I guess the same can be said about wild animals. I doubt that I'll ever run across that raccoon again...but if I do hope he/ she remembers that it owes me one. Off to shower now.....

He might have to have waited until the dumpster filled up some. Without water that might not be soon enuf though. I keep them out of my bird feeders and bluebird house by cutting off the top of a 55 gal plastic barrel and putting it upside down on top of the pole. Have one I only used half a barrel on and one has recently gotten up over the barrel and on to the feeder and steal the suet 2 different times ;~(. I think i saw him if it was the same one he was a big one. Need to replace it with a full one.
