I agree with most of what you're saying particularly the current issue(s). The thanking part is very individual dependent. I have, or had, friends who went to Vietnam. It was a pretty f'ed up situation during the fighting and even when it was "quiet". It was a skull fuck. Some still don't want to talk about it, others wear the hats etc. Generally speaking war is a failure of political types to do what they should have done.

FWIW, I didn't go it was ending and I got a high draft number (200 something).

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I understand what your saying but as an Army mom your service is much appreciated and that's peoples way of saying thank you. As my hubby is a Vietnam Veteran and he's always getting a thank you, and he's always telling other military members thank you for your service, as it's a sign of respect..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

In Canada, we don't go around thanking ex or current military for their service. In fact, unless you are near a military base, you rarely even see someone you could recognize as being military (or ex).

But I do want to thank you for speaking a viewpoint that is rarely heard (or read). Good for you, for using this platform to express some very important thoughts and feelings.

More people need to be totally honest like this.

Check out my profile or and become a "watcher" of my blog FMAOPLS,to learn more about me, and for intelligent, lively, smartassy and fun discussion, with a little irreverence thrown in. "Like" or comment on my photos, and I promise I'll add more. Thanks.

WWII vets were hailed as heroes. Vietnam vets were reviled - as if they were personally responsible for our military presence in se Asia. No one distinguished between volunteers and draftees.

I've always thought the trend of respect for vets now was due to the Vietnam vets making sure newer vets were treated better than they were. Much of America follows along - trying to atone for that treatment.

Thank you for a different perspective.

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

As always your post stimulates me to contemplate our country and what's going on and to share your expressions. My first husband got drafted two weeks after we got married. He was, literally, a guinea pig for the Army, testing radar ranges and pack goods for shipping to Viet Nam. I am not sure that he would like being "thanked" for something he was forced to do that resulted in killing people, thanks to the politicians.

Draft ended in 1973. You would have been 14 years old. That is ... if you're showing your real age here.

“To many active members, it’s just a job that opens doors.” Not a bad thing. So, while their agenda may seem self serving, we still benefit from their service. And sadly some never come back or come back disabled.
A thank you is a small way for us to appreciate, no matter their intent.

Im an army and marine Mom. I couldnt be more proud. Whether you enlisted for yourself or your country you were there to serve a purpose and you exceeded and did what you had to do. Marines didnt take you because they needed you to take up space so, in reality, you did serve your country. If someone does thank you for your service then just smile and accept it.

I am still going to thank you!!!

I don't put my actual birth year on any dating sites. They are easy pickings for h@ckerz. If you'e seen any of my responses regarding posting of age info here you would have seen I've been up front about it and why.

Thanks for the explanation. I don't follow every post you write in the first place so I guess I missed that one.
