Almost Ripped To Shreds . . . #47

Was it some traumatic experience, the smell of your mother's cooking as you stood in the kitchen next to her (tugging on her apron), or perhaps it was the taste of a birthday cake; everyone has an early childhood memory. Mine occurred when I was about three years old and it terrified me for years afterward.

Even though my parents and I lived in the city, my grandparents (with whom we were very close), had many friends who lived in rural areas, and farmed their land - and so we took a road trip. We drove up to this homestead, early one warm, summer morning. I have no recollection that we had all, scrambled into my father's '58 Chevy Bel Air, or that the drive took two and a half hours. Nor do I recall exactly, where I was sitting, while crammed up in that car - with my parents, grandparents and uncle. I vaguely remember, taking turns on everyone's lap; seat belts were an option, back in the day.

I do recall the next set of events - vividly. When we arrived at the farm and stopped, I was very happy, to finally free myself and run around. I jumped out the open car door, pushed my tiny legs and ran up a gravel path towards the farmhouse. As I ran, I heard the farm dogs barking - and there were many of them. But . . .the one that caught my eye, was the monstrous black german shepherd , galloping directly toward me, along that same, gravel path. His loud ferocious bark, stopped me dead in my tracks, but it was his snarling white teeth and the sheer size of that beast, that had me frozen and terrified. I began to cry and in fact I screamed in terror and horror, as that charged closer and closer. I remember thinking that I would probably be bitten and I closed my eyes.

My next distinct memory is of me, being swooped up in the air by my uncle Steve. He was a large man, well over 6 feet tall and he lifted me into his arms, high and far out of reach from ALL the dogs. I waited for that big black dog, to bite me - but he didn't. In fact, he slowed to a stop and just stood there, barking. I was grateful for my uncle's firm grip and I buried my face into his shoulder and hugged him with all my strength.

For many years afterward, I was completely terrified of dogs... until one day - my uncle Steve, gave me a tip.

"Paul . . . Never show a you're afraid. They sense fear. Respect dogs, but don't fear them. Approach a you don't know with caution, but with confidence as well. You'll see - that will be your friend ! "

I outgrew my fear of dogs, very quickly, after I began applying my uncle's words. To this day, I love dogs and can't help but approach one, play with one or just pet one... whenever I have the opportunity.

Well . . . I am definitely a dog person! OK . . . True ... I am allergic to cats, but even if I wasn't, I would take a dog any day of the week over a cat. A cat . . . total indifference to my presence, unless I am holding cat food, or unless it wants to be petted. A dog . .well . . A dog is a loyal friend.

Perhaps I would feel differently about cats if I didn't sneeze, every time I am around them . . I don't know. But there is something about a dog, when you look into their eyes . . It is almost as if they understand you. No I haven't watched too much Lassie . . lol Oh.... Remember the movie "Old Yeller " ? Or am I dating myself.

I am a cat lady and horses are my second choiceI was a Dog control officer for 12 years in the small;; town near where I live and handled so many dogs that I really kind of deterred me from attempting to own..I did own a dog she was 17 when she passed away greatest dog ever and couldn't bring myself to get another..we had an unshakeable bond and its painful to even think about getting one that would ever be as loyal as she was...I got lots of room 40 acres for an animal to run..but now with my disability I will just keep my foster cat Kodi..hes great company..

Actually ... The family pets we had as kids, were two tropical fish tanks that were populated with dozens of fish. My brother and I were breeding them Not quite like having a dog. The only trick I taught them was to swim to the top of the tank, when I would feed them . . . hmmm... yep ...

Hmm . . . I truly love horses as well. They are such kind , intelligent animals. I never had a chance to be around them often though. Are you a good rider ? Your experience with dogs sounds intriguing as well!

That fear element is so true. When dogs smell fear - they own you. Yep - that dog experience scared the crap outta me. Did you own a dog ?

My family always had a dog. They became beloved members of the family. I have continued that tradition with my own kids.

The first dog my kids and I had was a German Shepherd. Shelby was a sweet, gentle, beauty who looked a lot like the one in your pic. We were devastated when we lost her at age 9 to kidney cancer. Molly, a Black Lab/Bernese Mountain Dog recently turned 10. She loves everyone and would have been a great therapy dog.

Wow.. So sad about your dog. It's like loosing a family member and I understand. That Bernese mix sounds like a lot of huge bundle, though. I'll bet she's fun to play with. Thanks for sharing personal memories. 😊🐕

Dogs! I love dogs. Cats are disgusting. I believe in the near future, cats will be an alternative food source.

Wow ! That's quite the zoo you had in your household. And they all lived for so long. You were vary fortunate to be around all those animals. The only time I would get to see some of those- would be if I went to the pet shop. Thanks for sharing your wild story ! lol

Well you already know I am a cat lady. I had one puppy in my life, Meagan, a purebred Keeshond- so smart! trained in 24 hours not to go in the house. Problem was worked and she was home alone all day-not good for a new puppy. When she was about one I had some retired friens who wanted her so off to Kennebunk she went and then to South Carolina. When I went to visit I was totally bowled over- she remembered me and licked me to pieces.
Meagan even responded to my voice commands after 6 years.
After that it has always been cats and my name echoes it
Thanks for a terrific post for #47 Symposium!!!

Well, that's a cute and heartwarming little anecdote about your former dog. Amazing how she remembered you. 😊 You already know how I feel about your cats. Thanks for sharing the pic. Great! 😻🐱😊

Scary story! I've never really been a dog person. And have never owned a dog. But I do like cats. Cats are more sensuous. More intelligent. Thanks for sharing your story.

What a great contribution to the Symposium and great story as I have been bitten by my own dog years ago because my inlaws abused him. So I am scared of dogs even to this day. Thanks for the read and have a great day..

Bitten by your own dog? Eeeee.. 😱 That's not good and especially if you're still scared of dogs. Is there any hope you might overcome that fear? 🐕🤔 Thanks for sharing your pov. 😀

Great story.

I like pretty much all animals. They all have their good points. I just bought my daughter a puppy a couple of months back, so we're back to having a dog in the house. LOL

Hooray for Uncle Steve - the hero of the story!!

I grew up with dogs until I moved out of my parents home. Then I had a cat-person roommate so I had cats. Then I met my husband and we had both. After the last one died in 2012, I have been pet free. I love them both but cats are easier to care for than dogs and I'm lazy. So, I guess, I'm a dog person trapped in a cat person's body.

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

Can you imagine if uncle Steve wasn't as fast as he was? This blog wouldn't have been written... Eeee... 😭😱 True that cats are easier. Thankfully for me, I'm not allergic to the important ones... 😊 Thanks for cheering uncle Stevie on. I was hoping he would come through as well! 🐕🐶😀

I prefer dogs, and we had at least one for all my growing-up years.

We also had cats, of which I am NOT a fan. I remember, as a young child, our cat had a litter of kittens. As they grew, they would "nip at our bare feet", and I sure didn't like that.

I am afraid I will just NEVER comprehend the appeal of a cat.

Well... cats are good, I guess, if you're cold and you need a live blanket to sit on your lap. Then again, I can also have a lot of fun, petting that pussy and listening to her purr... Yes... That's fun...! 😊
It was always the claws I was worried about.... Hmmm.. 😺🐶

I'm a dog person.

I don't mind cats, I just don't want anything to do with litter boxes, so I've never had cats.
