Don't Be A Victim of Food Fraud

Food fraud is something I hadn’t really thought about. However, is rampant in Canada and internationally and is estimated “it.” costs the food industry between "10 and 15." billion dollars annually!

Below are some of the most commonly faked products and how “to.” make sure they aren't what you are buying:

Honey

Since honey is more expensive “to.” produce, some manufacturers use high-fructose corn syrup to dilute pure honey. But sweeteners all have different glycolic indexes, making altered honey a risk if you’re monitoring your blood sugar. The best thing is "to." buy pure honey is at a farmers’ market or from a grocery store that stocks local, independent honey makers.

Fish

A University of Guelph study found as many as "32." percent of fish sold in Ontario were mislabelled. The cause can vary from trying to. sell cheaper fish as more expensive types "to." inconsistent labelling regulations and oversight . Try buying from a seafood counter or fish market. And buy whole fish whenever possible. (Yes, heads and all!)

Olive Oil

Olive oil can be mislabeled. Some say “product of Italy” when the product was imported through Italy or bottled . Another problem is that “it.” may have been diluted with cheaper oils, such as canola or peanut, but sold as pure olive oil. Price awareness will help you identify the real stuff: a 500ml bottle of pure olive oil should cost no less than "$15."

Grated Parmesan Cheese

In 2016, Kraft Foods came under fire after was discovered their pre-grated parmesan, contained wood pulp! Any parmesan cheese without a distinctive protected designation of origin label, is not technically real parm; it can be produced in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. That said, many cheesemakers produce their own parmesan-like offerings without that PDO label. Buy those if you aren’t looking for pure authenticity.

I will admit I have been tripped up by buying those bottles of "Grated Parmesan Cheese" because of the lower price and convenience.
How well do you read food labels? Have you been fooled by food fraud?

Reeeelee... Damn! ❗
I wonder how many times I've been scammed and didn't even know it. 🤔
Who knew? I hope it's not trusted brands. THAT would be interesting to find out. 😮

I have reading labels for over 39 years. Has been going on for long time and seems to be getting worse. Honeybees populations have been on decline for a while yeat most stores, have shelves full. To me the taste was off. Yes buying local honey, oh there is the taste I am familiar with. I wish our government would have better, stricter controls on what is in food, and on label. Prepared for does not tell origin of product. There is a way you can tell from UPC code, sadly I no longer remember. Buyer beware....

It seems like now a daze there are a lot of fraudulent (in the broadest sense of the word) items and other things around. And governments pretend like they are doing something when in reality they are part of the problem.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

Grated Parmesan Cheese

What!

Parmesan comes from 2 places, so you have Parmesan Padano or Parmesan Reggiano. But everyone knows you only eat Reggiano, That's why it cost $ 25 to $ 37 a kilo.

Thanks for the warning. I buy my honey always directly from the "bee shop".

not to sound pedantic, but I usually get most of these from the Farmer's Market.

I would get the olive oil from an actual Italian family, the matriarch barely speaks English and I love it!

I'm not sure if I've been fooled or not, but the deli shredded parmesan is really good either way.

I knew about honey looks like I need to read the labels before buying. I do buy my fish over the counter so I'm not worried there. Thank you again! I hope you had a good day

Yep - who knew? Kraft is one of the "trusted" brands - specifically the grated parmesan cheese.

The disappearing honeybees are a legitimate concern that's been reported about for a number of years. Label reading is something we all should be doing. And you are right...buyer beware!

Agree - the government definitely has a role in all of the "fraudulent" practices.

Always happy to pass along interesting information that applies to our everyday lives. My Raptors and Blue Jays both lost so wasn't very happy

Thanks for the "heads" up about tuna. I have liked and tried Orange Roughy too but agree I wouldn't have tried it either if I knew the scientific name for it - sounds too yucky

Oh, I wasn't referring to the type you buy fresh over-the-counter. The "real" stuff is always more expensive

It's great that you have that option. For many, Farmer's Markets are not easily accessible. I would also buy red wine from an Italian family if it was available

If you are buying it freshly grated at the deli counter, you should be getting the "real deal". You could always ask to see the label to find out if it is the PDO one.

Fake crab meat is another one sexyldy. Buy honey from a farmers market if you can. The same can be said for maple syrup. Be aware of the fact that not all maple syrup is pure. There's a religious sect here in Ontario that often adds brown sugar to speed up production.

OMG... fake crab 🦀 has to be one of the worst! Label reading and asking the right questions is something we all should practice.

This kind of fraud is too common all over the world my lady

Farmers's markets and known producers are the solution nowadays
- and even then, through trial and error

Cheers - P

Yes, it certainly is and I had no idea how big the financial impact is to the food industry.

I read ALL labels - Celiac Disease. Processed foods are the worse, alongside of fast food. The oil they use the same oil for fries all day, if not multiple ones. Food manufactures count on the consumer being stupid ... we should be showing them we aren't! Enjoyed reading - thank you!

In Luv, Lite, Laffter ...

Wow - I certainly can understand how important it is for you to read labels. Processed foods are filled with chemicals and the long-term effects on our health have been well-documented. Personally, I have found an increased intolerance for fast foods and agree, the oil is probably the main culprit.
